In our continuing effort to monitor our security posture, we have made some security
configuration changes to our mail service. The new configuration settings apply to users that do not
use our webmail interface. The following instructions are provided to customers that are using
POP3 and IMAP4 client programs (i.e., Outlook) that access our mail servers. There are two ways to
resolve this issue. First you can set your outbound mail server to your upstream internet service
provider's outbound mail server, or you could make the following changes below.
- Set your smtp outbound mail server to smtpauth.telosonline.com.
Note: Do not substitute your domain name above.
Outlook Express
- Open Outlook Express.
- From the Outlook Express Tools menu, click Accounts
- Click the Mail tab
- Select your email account
- Click on the Properties button, then click on the Servers tab
- Change Outgoing mail(SMTP): smtpauth.telosonline.com
- Click OK
Outlook 2000
- Open Outlook 2000
- Click the Tools menu and then click Accounts
- Select your email account
- Click Properties
- Click on the Properties button, then click on the Servers tab
- Change Outgoing mail(SMTP): smtpauth.telosonline.com
- Click OK
Outlook 2002/03
- Open Outlook 2002/03
- On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts
- Click View or change existing e-mail accounts
- Select your email account
- Click Change
- Click Outgoing mail server(SMTP): smtpauth.telosonline.com
- This smtp server requires encrypted authentication, so changes on the email client Authentication settings is
needed? In order to activate this in outlook make the following changes listed below.
Explanation: Our smtp authenticated server requires password encryptions in the form of TLS or MD5 encryptions then reverts back to plain text password. Microsoft Outlook Clients automatically use TLS then switch to MD5 when they try to communicate with a smtp server when authentication is asked for. Other mail clients require additional attention.
Outlook Express
- Open Outlook Express.
- From the Outlook Express Tools menu, click Accounts
- Click the Mail tab
- Select your email account
- In the Properties dialog box, click the Servers tab
- Check My server requires authentication
- Click Use same Settings as incoming mail server
Outlook 2000
- Open Outlook 2000
- Click the Tools menu and then click Accounts
- Select your email account
- Click Properties
- In the Properties dialog box, click the Servers tab
- Check My server requires authentication
- Click Use same Settings as incoming mail server
Outlook 2002/03
- Open Outlook 2002/03
- On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts
- Click View or change existing e-mail accounts
- Select your email account
- Click Change
- Click More Settings
- Click the Outgoing Server tab
- Check My server requires authentication
- Click Use same Settings as incoming mail server
- Change the smtp server port from port 25 to port 587. Main reason
for this change is for AOL and other dialup modem networks which are starting to
heavy filter or block mail on port 25.
Outlook Express
- Open Outlook Express.
- From the Outlook Express Tools menu, click Accounts
- Click the Mail tab
- Select your email account
- In the Properties dialog box, click the Servers tab
- Click the Advanced tab
- Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) Port to 587
Outlook 2000
- Open Outlook 2000
- Click the Tools menu and then click Accounts
- Select your email account
- Click Properties
- In the Properties dialog box, click the Servers tab
- Click the Advanced tab
- View the Outgoing mail (SMTP) Port to 587
Outlook 2002/03
- Open Outlook 2002/03
- On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts
- Click View or change existing e-mail accounts
- Select your email account
- Click Change
- Click More Settings
- Click the Advanced tab
- View the Outgoing mail (SMTP) Port to 587
